Cobb-Wilkins and Guagenti Star on CACC Weekly Report, Penalty Kick Places DuMond on Honor Roll

New Haven, Conn. - (9/6/2016) – A stunning 5-0 victory over Barton College brought the Chestnut Hill College women’s soccer team plenty of fanfare and landed three student-athletes on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Soccer Weekly Report. An early penalty kick conversion from freshman forward Cecilia DuMond (Philadelphia, Pa.) held up as the game-winner thanks to two late insurance tallies from junior midfielder Kiersten Cobb-Wilkins (Lowman, N.Y.) and the stellar net-minding of junior goalkeeper Meghan Guagenti (Pennsauken, N.J.). For their efforts, Cobb-Wilkins and Guagenti were respectively honored as the league’s Co-Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week. DuMond earned an Honor Roll mention with the free kick; the first goal of her collegiate career.

The Griffins opened the 2016 season with a bang, scoring four goals in the second half to cruise to a 5-0 victory over Barton College on Friday, September 2, evening. After a tightly contested first half, the Griffins shined under the lights at Victory Field #1, breaking the contest open with a pair of early second-half scores and couple late insurance tallies. The Scarlet and Gold opened the game peppering the Barton College goalkeeper and eventually drawing a foul call inside the 18-yard box to win a penalty kick for DuMond at 16:53. The fortunate freshman calmly stepped up and ripped the free strike into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage. Play then settled down during the middle portion of the period, with neither team recording a quality scoring opportunity. The Bulldogs were able to build their attack from the midfield in the latter portions of the half, but Guagenti parried their fruitless attempts aside, making several huge saves to preserve the Griffins 1-0 lead at intermission.

With the halftime adjustments implemented, the Bulldogs were first to record a chance in the latter frame. But the spry Guagenti halted a pair of early shots from junior midfielder Alex Afflerbach (Woodbury, N.J.) and inspired her teammates for a string of insurance goals. The last two came from Cobb-Wilkins, who first struck a pass from sophomore midfielder Molly Sullivan (Pasco, Wash.) for the fourth Griffin goal (4-0) at 55:26. The fifth came in the 89th minute (88:51), when Cobb-Wilkins netted a long restart loft that cleared the keeper’s head.

For the Scarlet and Gold, Cobb-Wilkins led the way offensively, scoring two goals while Ferrell notched a goal and assist in the victory. Guagenti (1-0) turned aside nine shots to secure the win and her first collegiate shutout.

Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Tuesday, October 6, when they travel to intra-state foe Shippensburg University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
