Lang Saves versus the University of Bridgeport Lure League's Defensive Player of the Week Award; Herron Appears on CACC Weekly Honor Roll

Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (3/21/2017) – Senior goalkeeper Katie Joe Lang (Manassas, Va.) stopped 10 shots, grabbed three ground balls, and caused a turnover in Chestnut Hill College’s 11-6 loss to the University of Bridgeport, earning herself the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Defensive Player of the Week Award. Following yesterday’s, March 20, 18-8 league victory over Holy Family University, Lang ranks sixth in the league for goals-against-average (15.17 GAA), fifth is save percentage (.393), and second in total saves (59). Senior attack Samantha Herron (Cinnaminson, N.J.) also appeared on the league’s weekly report, garnering an Honor Roll mention after recording one goal and three assists in the loss to the Purple Knights.

Chestnut Hill College (1-5, 1-0) opened the scoring just 29 seconds (29:31) into the contest, with Herron netting an unassisted tally (1-0). The Griffins would double their advantage just over a minute later (28:28) on a free position goal from junior attack Julia Galantich (Clinton Corners, N.Y.). The University of Bridgeport (4-1) cut the Griffins’ lead to one goal, 2-1, at the 23:42 mark, when senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) found freshman Barbara Orsini (North Babylon, N.Y.) for her 10th goal of the year. Competition remained tight with the Griffins finding their groove just before halftime. Senior midfielder Lea Sanders (North Merrick, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the game with 3:47 remaining off a feed from Herron (3-2). The duo connected just under two minutes later (1:55) to up the host’s advantage to a pair, 4-2. But the Purple Knights continued to press down the stretch, scoring with 29 seconds remaining and cutting the Griffins’ intermission lead to a single score, 4-3.

The visitors blew open the game in the opening 10:24 of the second half, using a 6-0 run to take control of the game. The Griffins scored their first of the half when Herron found sophomore Julia Reinert (Bridgeport, Pa.) at 16:42, cutting the deficit down to four goals, 9-5. Unfortunately, the Griffins were not able to trim the deficit any further in an 11-6 final.

The Chestnut Hill College women's lacrosse team temporarily breaks from their CACC schedule to visit the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) for an 11:00 a.m. contest on Saturday, March 25.
