Two Goal Game Scores CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition for Burns
New Haven, Conn. - (9/19/2017) – Dominican College stole an early 1-0 lead in the 18th minute (18:47) and protected the advantage until the 85th minute (85:02), where junior forward Jason Burns (Douglassville, Pa.) put his head to good use on the equalizer, 1-1. He did so again a little more than four minutes later (89:11) to give Chestnut Hill College the lead, 2-1, with only seconds remaining and their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win of the season. He received a spot on the CACC Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll for his performance.
Chestnut Hill College (3-3, 2-1) earned a pair of corner kicks in the 12th minute (12:01, 12:26) and fired pair of shots, before a Dominican College (0-6, 0-3) drew a foul in the box for an early penalty kick opportunity and freshman forward Sergio Monton (Madrid, Spain) converted the free go to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 18:47. The Chargers controlled play after that, but the momentum eventually disappeared around the 49th minute, resulting in a rush of late Griffin chances; the last a stopped Burns drive.
As the sun beat down on the Chestnut Hill College Campus Field, tension rose on the pitch. Fouls piled up for the Chargers and the Griffins took their jabs strategically. Burns subbed in with 5:19 remaining and just second later completed a long serve from junior midfielder Tales Domingues (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with a header at the far post, 1-1. Overtime seemed a guarantee until the 87:08 when a Dominican College foul gave the Griffins a crucial free kick. Burns met that restart with his head as well, 2-1 (89:11), and clinching the league win for Chestnut Hill College.
Burns also recorded two shots in a reserve role during the Griffins’ 5-1 CACC loss to Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday, September 13.
