North Wales, PA – (4/10/2010) – Chestnut Hill College owned a 3-2 lead through five innings of game one; unfortunately the Griffins lost their grip in the sixth inning, before Dominican College won the opener in their final at-bat, 4-3. The Chargers used the momentum to plated three runs in the first, two innings of the second game. They won the rematch 9-5 to sweep the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader.
Dominican College (14-10, 6-3) scored a run in each of its first, two at-bats, but Chestnut Hill College (10-13, 8-4) took the lead in the third inning thanks to a run-scoring single from sophomore left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) and a deep double from junior catcher Bryan Henry (Columbus, NJ). Henry's double bounced off the wall and plated two Griffins to put the home team ahead 3-2. Senior pitcher Robby Williams (Allentown, PA) held that advantage until the top of the sixth inning when the Chargers tied the contest on a two-out single up the middle. The contest remained tied until the ninth inning when the Chargers scored on a pair of two-out hits. Griffins stranded sophomore second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) in their final at-bat to end the game in defeat. Williams allowed two earned runs on seven hits and a walk while taking no decision. He struck out four.
The Chargers bats connected early in game two. A homerun and a double plated two Chargers in the first, two innings while the Griffins sat scoreless until the fourth inning. Junior right fielder Dan Etherton (Princeton, NJ) led off the fourth inning with his second homerun of the season and the Griffins second run of the at-bat would score on a sacrifice fly from junior third baseman D.J. Santoro Jr. (Jeffersonville, PA). Etherton came through again in the Griffins' next at-bat, tying the contest, 3-3, with a two-out single. Unfortunately, six hits and three errors allowed the Chargers to score six unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning, putting the Griffins down 9-3. The Griffins got two back in the bottom of the frame on homerun from junior shortstop George Kochu (Pottstown, PA), 9-5, but that would conclude the scoring for the afternoon.
The baseball team returns to action in a non-conference contest at Philadelphia University on Wednesday, April 14. Opening pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
