North Wales, PA – (4/27/2010) – Chestnut Hill College played Philadelphia University for the fourth time this season as the two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) members met for a non-conference affair at Hostelley Field. The Rams avoided the season sweep with a 6-3 win over the Griffins. Sophomore left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) recorded two doubles and a run-batted-in (RBI) to lead Chestnut Hill College.
Philadelphia University (11-19) changed the face of the contest with five runs in the top of the third inning. Senior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA) broke an early 1-1 tie with a two-run homer to left field, giving the Rams a 4-1 advantage. Another hit and several walks later the Rams ended the at-bat up 6-1. Chestnut Hill College (15-19) got a run back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Latchum led off the at-bat with a double to right field. A single from junior designated hitter Bryan Henry (Columbus, NJ) moved him to third base and he would eventually score on a sacrifice fly from junior first baseman Andrew Donofry (Hatboro, PA), 6-2. The Griffins would not get another run until the bottom of the ninth inning; when a two-out double from senior first baseman Jimmy Young (Easton, PA) scored Latchum for the second time, 6-3. Unfortunately, the Rams recorded the final out before the Griffins could score anymore.
Freshman pitcher Jeffrey Bohus (Cherry Hill, PA) pitched seven strong innings to earn the win for the Rams. He allowed one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out five. He helped his own effort with two hits at the plate. Freshman catcher Kevin Gibbs (Pittman, NJ) also recorded two hits for the Rams.
The Griffin bullpen gave a class performance. They held the Rams scoreless over the final 19 outs, which included freshman pitcher John Orr (Oceanside, NY) striking out the side in the fifth inning. Freshman pitcher Rudy Behrens (Wallingford, CT) took the loss (1-3).
The baseball team will host Wilmington University in a non-conference contest tomorrow night as the Griffins conclude their home schedule on Wednesday, April 28, with Senior Night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
