North Wales, PA – (4/28/2010) – In a collective effort, the Chestnut Hill College pitching staff limited Wilmington University to one run on five scattered hits carrying the Griffins to a 3-1 non-conference victory. The Griffins scored all three runs in their first at-bat, with junior first baseman Mike Knipe (Sellersville, PA) and senior designated hitter Jimmy Young (Easton, PA) registering run-scoring hits. Prior to the start of this evening's contest, Young and senior pitcher Robby Williams (Allentown, PA) were honored in a brief Senior Night ceremony.
Junior right fielder Dan Etherton (Princeton, NJ) got Chestnut Hill College (16-19) started in the first inning with a lead-off single to center field. He promptly stole second base allowing sophomore left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) to reach on an infield single to the left side. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position before Knipe plated both Griffins with a single down the right field line. Sophomore third baseman Peter Kidd (New York, NY) followed Knipe with a single. A double steal and a walk to sophomore center fielder Eric Blood (Perkasie, PA) then loaded the bases for Young, who singled to put the Griffins up 3-0 with no outs. Wilmington University (25-14) would end the inning without allowing any further damage, but it was enough for the Griffins to claim victory thanks to a tremendous performance by the pitching staff. Freshman pitcher Bob Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) started the game with two scoreless innings of work and he was followed on the hill by junior Chris Lauber (Morton, PA), junior Justin Wiercinski (Hatboro, PA), freshman Andrew Lawrence (Woodstown, NJ), and freshman John Orr (Oceanside, NY). The bullpen teamed to allow one run on four hits and five walks over the final seven innings of the affair. Orr earned his first collegiate save, as he struck out four Wildcats while only giving up one hit and two walks in the final two innings. Wiercinski was credited with the win (2-1).
The baseball team concludes the 2010 regular season with a trip to Post University on Saturday, May 1. The Griffins' final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
