Philadelphia, PA – (10/25/2011) – A 25-12 opening-set loss quickly refocused Chestnut Hill College, who recovered for a 3-2 (12-25, 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over the University of the Sciences this evening. After the rough start, the Griffins were led by 17 kills and 19 digs from sophomore outside hitter
Alex DePalma (Shillington, PA), and 39 assists and 19 digs from freshman setter
Sidney Chukuntarod (San Francisco, CA).
Eight aces and a balanced attack scored the University of the Sciences (4-19, 4-12) a 25-12 win in the first set, but it only motivated Chestnut Hill College (12-15, 7-8) to rally. DePalma and junior middle hitter
Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) each scored four kills apiece in the second set to power the Griffins to a 25-23 win. The third set was won 25-21 thanks to four more kills from DePalma and six from sophomore middle hitter
Mary Markowski (Parkton, MD), but the match was brought even by a 25-19 win in the fourth set. Fortunately, the Griffins got out o an early 8-3 lead before defeating the Devils with a 15-12 win in the deciding set.
Freshman outside hitter Amanda DeAngelo (Vestal, NY), sophomore setter Diana Solomon (East Islip, NY), and junior outside hitter Stacey Wooden (Levittown, PA) combined to headline the Devil effort. DeAngelo totaled 19 kills, 17 digs, and five blocks. Solomon offered ten kills, 19 assists, four aces, and 18 digs. And Wooden recorded 11 kills, five aces, and 22 digs.
DePalma and Chukuntarod received support from a host of Griffin contributors. Benson finished with five kills and seven blocks, while Markowski recorded nine kills and three blocks. Freshman right side
Katie Schock (Allentown, PA) also helped with 11 kills and junior libero
Liz DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) chipped in with two aces and 33 digs.
