Box Score Myrtle Beach, SC – (2/26/2011) – The baseball team continued play in the Northeast Challenge this morning, engaging Molloy College in competition at the Ripken Experience complex. The Lions plated eight runs between the second and third innings to separate from the Griffins for an 11-3 victory. Junior shortstop P.J. Kidd (New York, NY) led the Griffins with two hits and sophomore pitcher John Bernhardt (Lafayette Hill, PA) provided four innings of scoreless relief.
Each team scored a run in the first inning with the Griffins scoring on a two-out single from junior centerfielder Eric Blood (Perkasie, PA). In the bottom of the second inning, Molloy College (2-1) grabbed the advantage with five runs on four hits and an error, 6-1. They added three more runs with the aid of two more Chestnut Hill College (1-2) errors in the third inning, 9-1. The Griffins scored in the fourth inning with freshman third baseman Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA) platting a run with a groundout to short, 9-2, but with five errors in all the Griffins could not make ground on the Lions, 11-3.
After a rocky start for the defense, the Griffins turned to Bernhardt to settle the waters. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two over his four innings of relief work. Junior Justin Jorgenen (Bethpage, NY) earned the win for the Lions allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out three Griffins. Sophomore first baseman Juan Borbon (Plainview, NY) recorded three hits while sophomore left fielder Erik Pyle (Atlantic Beach, NY) knocked in three runs with two hits.
The baseball team concludes their play in the Northeast Challenge tomorrow, Sunday, February 27, with a 9:00 p.m. contest against Stonehill College.
