Ft. Pierce, FL – (3/11/2011) – Chestnut Hill College closed their visit to Florida Coast Spring Training with four games in two days. They won the first, 7-5, on six Ohio Valley College errors. Then dropped the second contest on March 10, 5-0, as the bats went quiet against the arms of West Virginia Wesleyan College. Today, Friday, March 11, the Griffins faced Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival, Post University, in non-conference play. The Eagles swept the early-season doubleheader; 4-3 and 10-2. The Griffins finished their Florida Coast Spring Training trip with a 2-6 record to return home with a 3-9 overall standing.

Yesterday, Ohio Valley College (4-8) committed six errors, walked five batters, and hit two others to help Chestnut Hill College (3-6) to their second win at the Florida coast. The Griffins trailed 3-1 after four innings, but they caught up after scoring five runs on one hit, and three errors over their next two at-bats, 6-3. The Fighting Scots got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning, 6-5, but single from senior third baseman George Kochu (Pottstown, PA) added another in the seventh inning, 7-5, before senior pitcher Matt Casino (Port Chester, NY) earned his third save in the Griffins third win of the season.

West Virginia Wesleyan College (6-4) got the jump on Chestnut Hill College (3-7) in the second game of the afternoon with four runs in the first inning. Senior Kevin Holdsworth (Morgantown, WV) shutdown the Griffins over seven innings, holding them scoreless despite allowing four hits and two walks. He struck out five in the win.

Chestnut Hill College (3-8) completed their spring trip this afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against Post University (7-3). The Eagles scored early in the opener to withstand a late Griffin rally. Down 4-1 heading to the sixth inning the Griffins threatened after a lead-off double from junior second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA). A two-out double from senior catcher Andrew Donofry (Hatboro, PA) brought Daywalt home, 4-2, before a Kochu single, a double steal, and an error landed another Griffin run to put the pressure on the Eagles, 4-3. Unfortunately, the Griffins went silently in the seventh inning to leave the Eagles to victory.

Post University (8-3) claimed a 10-2 victory in the second game of the day, using a six-run, sixth inning to overcome their sloppy defense. Each team scored early, before some middle-inning defensive malaise left the Eagles to a 4-2 advantage. Senior right fielder Dan Etherton (Princeton, NJ) recorded three hits and both Chestnut Hill College (3-9) runs scored on errors, but with six runs in a six-hit, sixth inning the Eagles separated for the sweep.

The baseball team returns home to open their new home, Latshaw-McCarthy Field, with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game against the University of the Sciences on Tuesday, March 15.
