Box Score
Norristown, PA – (3/15/2011) – Opening day at Latshaw-McCarthy Field lasted four innings longer than expected as Chestnut Hill College defeated the University of the Sciences 3-2 after 13 innings of non-conference play. The runs came early on errors from both sides, but after ten innings of scoreless baseball the Griffins finally wore through the Devils pitching staff with a hit baseman triggering the drama. Junior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) delivered the game-winning single and senior pitcher Ryan Weber (Philadelphia, PA) collected the win (1-1) in relief.

Fielding troubled both teams through the early innings with each side platting two runs by the third inning. From there, pitching took over. For Chestnut Hill College (4-9), senior pitcher Chris Lauber (Morton, PA) settled in and held the USciences (1-6) to three hits and three walks over six innings of work. The Devils matched with solid relief appearances freshman John McConville (New Windsor, NY) and junior Luke Peyton (Haddonfield, PA), only to be echoed by the Griffins bullpen effort. Sophomore pitcher Bob Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA), senior pitcher Matt Casino (Port Chester, NY), and Weber combined to hold the Devils scoreless over the final six innings. Hopkins allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three over four innings.

Sophomore catcher Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, PA) was beamed to lead-off the Griffins half of the 13th inning. The winning run was moved to second with a stolen base from pinch runner, freshman Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, PA). Following an intentional walk, the Griffins had two aboard. The Devils changed pitchers, but Lites beat the ball to third base on sacrifice bunt from senior designated hitter Andrew Koziol (Wilmingtown, DE) allowing Latchum a golden opportunity. He lined the 3-2 offering to right field to plate the winning run. Junior shortstop P.J. Kidd (New York, NY) recorded two hits and brought home the Griffins first run of the second inning with a bunt-single to third base. The second run came in on a Latchum fielder's choice.

The baseball team opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Saturday, March 19, with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader against Bloomfield College.
