Tennis Splits Afternoon Doubleheader with Marauders

Philadelphia, PA – (3/25/2011) – The women's team was victorious in today's doubleheader match with Millersville University to earn Chestnut Hill College a split. The Griffins scored a 6-3 win in the women's match while the men fell to the Marauders, 5-4.
 
Chestnut Hill College (11-9) women played well in the top matches earning wins at number one and number two doubles, before claiming victory with wins in the top four individual flights. Sophomore Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) teamed for an 8-0 win at number one doubles, while sophomores Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) and Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) earned an 8-5 win at number two doubles. Millersville University (3-5) won number three doubles 8-1. Holding a 2-1 edge, the Griffins took to singles play with confidence. Shcherbakova rallied to win number one singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, Dennis took number two singles 6-0, 6-2, Parapouras claimed number three singles 6-1, 6-1, and Knott won number four singles 3-6, 6-1, 10-7. The Marauders would collect points at number five singles, 6-4, 6-0, and number six singles, 8-0, but it was not enough to catch the Griffins.
 
The men's tennis team entered singles play trailing 2-1 after Millersville University (6-3) took the advantage with wins of 8-0 and 8-1 at number one and number two doubles, respectively.  Juniors Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) and Adrian Avena (Vineland, NJ) won number three doubles 8-1. Using their doubles wins to their advantage, the Marauders won the match despite splitting singles play with Chestnut Hill College (5-9). Senior Mario Gutierrez (Malaga, Spain), sophomore Patrick Villafuerte Joson (Old Bridge, NJ), and freshman Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) scored individual victories. Gutierrez won number one singles 6-3, 6-2, Joson won number three singles 6-3, 6-2, and Ceniceros won number four singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).  
 
The women's tennis team returns to action with a 4:00 p.m. home match against the University of the Sciences on Thursday, March 31, while the men's tennis team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule tomorrow, Saturday, March 26, with a 1:00 p.m. home match against Post University.
