Baseball Beat By Buccaneers Before Rain Washes Out Game with Golden Falcons

Palm Beach, FL – (3/6/2011) – Chestnut Hill College and Barry University each plated a run in the first inning of their contest at Florida Coast Spring Training; but the Buccaneers got to the Griffin bullpen for 16 runs in the last five innings to win the contest, 19-1. Junior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) and junior second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) each recorded two hits atop the Griffin line-up, but they received little help rest of the order.
 
The contest started well for Chestnut Hill College (2-4), as a Latchum lead-off single and a Daywalt bunt-single placed two runners aboard. After moving to third on an error, Latchum came around to score on a sacrifice fly from senior right fielder Dan Etherton (Princeton, NJ), 1-0. Barry University (11-7) answered in the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off homerun from senior centerfielder Drew Dwelly (New Bedford, MA), 1-1. The Buccaneers scored another run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, 2-1, and added a third run in the fourth inning, 3-1, before junior pitcher Rudy Behrens (Wallingford, CT) left the game. After that the Buccaneers ripped the Griffins bullpen for 16 runs over last five innings, 19-1. Junior pitcher Corey Witkowski (Pembroke Pines, FL) limited the Griffins to seven hits and a run in his six inning of work; he struck out three.
 
The Griffins second scheduled game of the afternoon, with Felician College, was cancelled due to the rainy weather. The baseball team will resume play in Florida Coast Spring Training on Tuesday, March 8, with an 8:45 a.m., seven-inning, doubleheader in Fort Pierce against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
