Bronxville, NY – (4/19/2011) – #4Chestnut Hill College journeyed to #1 Concordia College (NY) this afternoon for the semifinal round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Tennis Championship Tournament. The Clippers won the match by a 5-0 final and will advance to play #2 Philadelphia University in the CACC Championship, which will be host at Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, April 21. The Rams topped the #3 University of the Sciences 5-2 in the other CACC semifinal matchup.
Chestnut Hill College (9-13, 3-3) gave their best effort, but could not overcome Concordia College (20-2, 6-0) on their home court. Sophomore Patrick Villafuerte Joson (Old Bridge, NJ) and freshman Juan Farah (Caracas, Venezuela) represented the Griffins at number one singles and they challenged junior Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and junior Felix Missal (Dusseldorf, Germany) to an 8-2 loss. Juniors, Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) and Adrian Avena (Vineland, NJ) lost by the same final, 8-2, at number three doubles while senior Mario Gutierrez (Malaga, Spain) and freshman Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) competed to an 8-1 defeat at number two doubles. The Clippers clinched the victory in singles play with junior Geza Bazula (Budapest, Hungary) defeating Joson 6-1, 6-1 at number two singles and Boldarev topping Gutierrez 6-2, 6-0 at number one singles.
The Griffins finish the 2010-2011 season 9-13 overall and 3-3 in CACC competition. En route to their second straight CACC Championship Tournament appearance, the men's tennis team was ranked as high as #8 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region.
