Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (4/27/2011) – The Griffins continued fight, winning their third straight contest in come back fashion. Chestnut Hill College supported another strong bullpen performance with two, seventh-inning runs and defeated the University of the Sciences (USciences) 6-5 in this afternoon's non-conference contest. Senior designated hitter Mike Knipe (Sellersville, PA) led the Griffins offensively a three-hit performance and two runs-batted-in (RBI).
Knipe got Chestnut Hill College (13-18) rolling early. He knocked in the Griffins first run with a first-inning triple, 1-0, knocked in the second run with a third-inning single, 2-0, and was the third run, 3-0, scoring on a RBI-double from freshman first baseman Joe Mullin (Warrington, PA). USciences (12-19) responded in their next two at-bats scoring five runs on seven hits and an error for a 5-3 lead. The Griffins cut it to one in the fifth inning, 5-4; with a lead-off double from junior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA), and a RBI-single from freshman third baseman Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA). Meanwhile, the bullpen pacified the Devils to allow the winning runs to score in the seventh inning. Puskar led off with a walk, a single from Knipe, and a sacrifice by Mullin put two Griffins in scoring position. Capitalizing on two Devil errors, the Griffins would get two across, 6-5, before the arms sealed the victory.
Junior John Flack (Upper Holland, PA) picked up his first win (1-0) and senior Chris Lauber (Morton, PA) earned his first save (1) of the season in a group effort by the Griffin bullpen. Combined, five relievers held the Devils to two hits and four walks, while striking out five over the final 5.2 innings. Latchum and freshman centerfielder Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, PA) recorded two hits apiece.
The baseball team will resume play on Saturday, April 30 with a landmark homecoming as the program recognizes their first, four-year senior class in a pregame Senior Day ceremony. Post University will join the Griffins at 12:00 p.m. for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader.
