Philadelphia, PA – (4/7/2011) – A short trip to Philadelphia University brought Chestnut Hill College to this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match. The Rams were the victor, sweeping the match 9-0. The Griffins gave their best showing at number one singles, where senior Mario Gutierrez (Malaga, Spain) battled junior Adrian Torroella-Cruz (Gainesville, FL) to a 7-6, 5-7, 10-4 defeat.
Gutierrez aimed to spirit the Chestnut Hill College (7-11, 2-2) from a 3-0 deficit as Philadelphia University (13-5, 3-1) won all three doubles matches. Freshman Juan Farah (Caracas, Venezuela) and sophomore Patrick Villafuerte Joson (Old Bridge, NJ) lost 8-1 at number one doubles, but the Griffins fared better in the second and third flights. Gutierrez and freshman Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) lost number two doubles 5-4 while junior Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) and Adrian Avena (Vineland, NJ) fell 8-4 at number three doubles.
A tight opening set left Gutierrez behind, 7-6. He answered Torroella-Cruz with a 7-5 win in the second set. Unfortunately, the rally was denied with Torroella-Cruz taking the last set of the top singles match 10-4. The Rams scored two-set victories in the remaining individual matches to complete the sweep.
The men's tennis team continues their CACC schedule with a 3:30 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences on Wednesday, April 13.
