Box Score 1 Orangeburg, NY – (4/9/2011) – Chestnut Hill College threatened late in both of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests, but Dominican College came away with the sweep winning 18-11 and 8-6. Junior right fielder Eric Blood (Perkasie, PA) recorded four hits and two runs-batted-in (RBI) in the opener while three, ninth-inning doubles nearly earned the Griffins a split in game two.
Junior pitcher David Bartuska (Duryea, PA) looked to complete the Dominican College (16-9, 9-0) sweep, keeping Chestnut Hill College (8-17, 4-6) to two runs, one earned, over the first eight innings of game two, 8-2. The win was nearly blown, as Blood led off the Griffins half of the ninth inning with a walk. A Stolen base and a throwing error by the Charger catcher moved Blood to third before four RBI singles narrowed the margin to 8-6. Unfortunately, the Griffin rally fell short.
The Griffins got off to a good start in game one with three, first-inning runs. Junior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) led off the affair with a single to centerfield and after a sacrifice bunt, the Griffins scored three runs on a single from senior catcher Andrew Donofry (Hatboro, PA) and doubles from senior designated hitter George Kochu (Pottstown, PA) and Blood. The Chargers responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and each side scored one run in the third inning, before the home team platted 13 runs in their next four at-bats. Nine of those runs came in the seventh inning, but the Griffins were not finished. RBI Doubles from freshman pinch hitter Joe Mullin (Warrington, PA), senior third baseman D.J. Santoro Jr. (Jeffersonville, PA), and Latchum helped to score six runs in the Griffins half of the ninth inning, but Charges would hold on for the 18-11 win.
The baseball team continues their CACC schedule with a 3:00 p.m. contest at Philadelphia University on Thursday, April 14.
