Second-Half Scoring Barrage Brings Wildcats Win Over Women’s Soccer

10/17/2012 9:35:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (10/17/2012) – The first half of this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest proved to be misleading as a 1-0 Wilmington University edge turned into a 6-2 win over Chestnut Hill College. The Wildcats outscored the Griffins 5-2 in the second half thanks to a hat trick effort from freshman forward Chelsea Grace (Palmyra, N.J.).

Grace gave Wilmington University (8-6-2, 8-1-1) their initial lead, 1-0, scoring from 15-yards out on the right flank off the feed from sophomore defender Morgan Fraczkowski (Forest Hill, Md.) at 27:33. Chestnut Hill College (6-9, 6-4) looked to tie the affair before the break as they led the Wildcats 8-3 in first-half shots. Unfortunately, they came away empty handed and remained down 1-0 at intermission. Following halftime the scoring frenzy began. The Wildcats first extended their lead to 2-0 at 49:18, when Fraczkowski crossed a ball to senior forward Brittany Rhodes (Baltimore, Md.). Over the next four and a half minutes the Griffins erased the Wildcat advantage with back-to-back tallies. At 50:05, junior midfielder Stephanie Litty (Marlton, N.J.) found senior defender Shannon Catts (Elmer, N.J.) on a corner kick, 2-1, and at 53:45 senior forward Alyssa Radetich (Sewell, N.J.) crossed the ball for a scoring strike from junior forward Kaelyn Pizarro (Berlin, N.J.), 2-2. The knotting was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats launch a full-out offensive. They scored four times before the final buzzer; the first two were netted by Grace, 4-2 (64:16 and 70:34), the third came on a penalty kick by junior midfielder Jordanne Hoesli-Atkins (Middlesex, England), 5-2 (71:35), and the fourth on a connection between sophomore midfielder Victoria Vasapoli (Burlington, N.J.) and Rhodes, 6-2 (74:18).

Grace's four shots and three goals led the Wildcats offensive outburst. Four others recorded at least two shots. In goal, senior Amanda Walters (Baltimore, Md.) made four saves in the win.

For the Griffins, sophomore midfielder Katherine Williams (Pennsauken, N.J.) spearheaded the offensive assaults. She totaled nine shots, but came away empty handed. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, Del.) made four saves in the loss (5-8).

The women's soccer team plays their final CACC road contest of the season on Saturday, October 20, when they visit Dominican College for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
