Griffins Labor against Lady Rams

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/26/2012) – Facing the cross-town Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival, Chestnut Hill College dropped a 3-0 decision (25-19, 25-17, 25-18) to Philadelphia University this evening. The Griffins were led by freshmen middle hitter Rachel Biro (Narberth Pa) and outside hitter Abby Gruver (Coplay, Pa.) who both had 10 kills, Gruver also led the defense with 16 digs.
 
First set saw both teams trading kills up until six points apiece, when Philadelphia University (17-8, 11-5) took control. After falling behind and trailing by as many as nine points (18-9), Chestnut Hill College (8-19, 4-12) rallied for a furious comeback and narrowed the score to 19-17, before the Rams claimed the frame on a 25-19 final. Second set belonged to the Lady Rams who were led by freshman middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River N.Y.) and senior outside hitter Ellie Edgar (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) with three kills each. Meanwhile, their defense kept the Griffins at bay with senior libero Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa.) hustling to seven digs, 25-17. In hope of a comeback, the Griffins attacked behind by Biro who benefitted off the feed of senior setter Courtney Gallo (Wilmington Del.). Unfortunately, the Lady Rams slowly pulled away and won the match with a 25-18 set-victory.
 
The Lady Rams were led by junior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill.) and Edgar, whose all-around play earned them a CACC season-sweep of the Griffins. Olsen totaled five kills, two aces, ten digs, and a block, while Edgar supplied five kills, five aces, and three blocks. The point of the Lady Ram offense was played by freshman setter Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla.) and junior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa.), who provided 13 assists and 11 assists, respectively. Senior libero Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa.) led the Lady Ram defense with 15 digs. Olsen supported her with ten digs of her own.
 
Gallo finished the match with 17 assists as the distributor for the Griffins. Junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.) and junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.) helped Gruver on defense. DePalma made 12 digs and Markowski blocked four balls.
 
The women's volleyball team heads right back to the court tomorrow, Saturday, October 27, when Nyack College comes to campus for a 1:00 p.m. start.
