Box Score 2 Norristown, PA – (3/26/2012) – Late inning heroics spurred Dominican College past Chestnut Hill College in both of this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Chargers used a ninth-inning, three-run homerun to win the opener 9-6, then edged the Griffins out 7-4 in the night cap after a great start from freshman pitcher
Dom Raia (Philadelphia, PA).
In the opener, Chestnut Hill College (12-10, 3-3) trailed 6-4 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. A lead-off single to sophomore first baseman
Joe Mullin (Warrington, PA) provided opportunity, and after wild pitch, and a one-out single to freshman third baseman
Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ) there were two aboard. A single to right field from senior second baseman
Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) plated the first Griffin run, 6-5, and a passed ball brought home another, 6-6. Unfortunately, Dominican College (6-15, 3-4) received a heroic three-run homerun from sophomore catcher Tyler Clark (Cheshire, CT) in the ninth inning, 9-6. Daywalt was 3-for-5 with two runs-batted-in to lead the Griffins.
The Griffins scored the first run of the night cap on the head's-up base running of sophomore center fielder
Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, PA). A lead-off single for sophomore designated hitter
Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA) was the eventual run, as a sacrifice bunt, a Charger error, and a bit of gamesmanship gave the Griffins the early advantage, 1-0. After a busy fifth inning it was a 3-3 contest, but the Chargers took the edge heading to the late at-bats with a run in the eighth, 4-3, and three in the ninth, 7-3. The Griffins got one back in their last ups with a Mullin sacrifice fly, but it was not enough to complete the rally, 7-4. Raia was left to no decision despite allowing no earned runs on four hits, while striking out nine in seven innings of work.
The baseball team visits Lincoln University on Thursday, March 29, as they break from their CACC schedule for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Lions.
