In a well pitched opener, Concordia College (NY) (8-26, 6-6) was the first to get on the scoreboard with a seventh-inning single to left field from senior center fielder Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY), 1-0. In the ninth inning, Chestnut Hill College (17-16, 4-8) made the most of every opportunity, using an error, a sacrifice bunt, and a Steen single to right field even the contest and force extra innings, 1-1. Steen led the offense with two hits (2-for-4) while junior pitcher Bob Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) allowed an unearned run on seven hits and two walks. He struck out two and went nine innings in the no decision.

The Clippers used the momentum to their advantage, platting two runs in the first inning and fourth innings to lead the Griffins 4-0 early in game two. The Griffins answered with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly from freshman right fielder Mike McLaughlin (Philadelphia, PA), 4-1, and a sixth inning sacrifice fly from sophomore designated Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA), 4-2.
