Harbach Homers Hurt Griffins in War with Wildcats

4/5/2012 10:04:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 New Castle, DE – (4/5/2012) – The Wilmington University bats were heard from early and often in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, as the Wildcats took the first game from Chestnut Hill College 12-0, before completing the sweep with a 6-2 win in game two. Senior center fielder Joe Harbach (Abingdon, MD) connected for three homeruns to total seven runs-batted-in (RBI) in the twin bill.

Harbach homered twice in the first game, but they were only needed as insurance after an eight-run first inning for Wilmington University (16-12, 5-6). A two-out error by the Chestnut Hill College (15-13, 3-5) shortstop left the door open for the Wildcats, who capitalized with a walk, a hit batsman, and a string of hits to grab early 8-0 advantage. The Wildcats added two more runs on Harbach's third-inning homerun, 10-0, before a second Harbach homer and a sacrifice fly extended the deficit to 12-0 in the sixth inning. Sophomore pitcher Justin DeLong (New Castle, DE) held the Griffins to three hits and two walks over eight innings while striking out six. The Griffins had their best chance in the fifth inning with sophomore catcher Joe Mullin (Warrington, PA) recording a one-out single and freshman first baseman Anthony McQuade (Lindenhurst, NY) following with a single to center field, but Griffins never got a runner past second base. Senior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) recorded the Griffins other single with one out in the eighth inning.

The Wildcats scored the first run of game two in their first at-bat, thanks to a lead-off single, a stolen base, a throwing error, and a grounder second base, 1-0. Taking a page out of their rival's book, the Griffins used a two-out error to score two runs in the fourth inning. Freshman right fielder Mike McLaughlin (Philadelphia, PA) reached on the error and advanced to second on a Mullin single down the left field line. Another error, this one on a McQuade grounder, allowed McLaughlin to score, 1-1, before an attempted double steal allowed Mullin to hustle home, 2-1. Unfortunately, the Wildcats responded in the bottom of the frame with a run on a one-out sacrifice, 2-2, and two runs on a third Harbach homerun, 4-2. They added two more runs in the sixth inning, both coming by way of catcher throwing errors, 6-2. Freshman third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ) led the Griffins lineup with two hits, as Wildcat senior pitcher Ryan Lally (Chalfont, PA) earn the win by only allowing five hits and a walk. He struck out eight in six innings.

The baseball team continues their CACC schedule tomorrow, Friday, April 6, with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Bloomfield College.
