CACC Crown Decided On Final Point; Griffins Give Way in Singles Sets

Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/20/2013) – Just as it did in their early season meeting, today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship between #1 Chestnut Hill College and #2 Concordia College (NY) came down to the final point. Unfortunately, the decision was opposite of the Griffins regular season win as the Clippers bounced back from a 2-1 doubles deficit to earn their fifth straight league crown with a 4-2 singles edge, 5-4.

After doubles play, Chestnut Hill College (13-2) held a 2-1 advantage over Concordia College (9-2). The Clippers were first to score with freshman Costanza Mecchi (Rome, Italy) and freshman Stefanie Canals-Baker (Pollensa, Spain) teaming for an 8-4 win over the Griffins top duo of junior Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) and freshman Marie Deleval (Grimaud, France). But the Griffins made use of their home court advantage by taking the remaining doubles flight; junior Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) and sophomore Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.) won number three doubles off freshman Valeriia Cheban (Odessa, Ukraine) and sophomore Nicole Stuhr (Glendora, Calif.), 8-4, before senior Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) claimed number two doubles from junior Linda Eliasson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Kravchuk, 8-5.

The Griffins quickly extended their lead to 3-1 soon after the start of singles play with sophomore Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) defeating Stuhr 6-0, 6-2 in the sixth individual flight. The Clippers stayed close on the Griffins heels though as Mecchi won the battle of number ones with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Dawson and the knotted the match only moments later when Canals-Baker defeated Deleval 6-2, 6-4 at number three singles. The Griffins nudged ahead one last time when Oechsle earned her 100th career win with a  6-1, 6-1 number five singles win over Cheban, but all things became even with Eliasson defeating Williams-Mulesa 6-0, 6-2 at number two doubles. The decision came down to number four singles. By that time, Dennis and Kravchuk had already split the first two sets. The final went Kravchuk's way as the Clippers number four came from behind to top Dennis 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Dennis, Oechsle, and Owens represented Chestnut Hill College on the CACC All-Tournament Team. They were joined by Goldey-Beacom College's freshman Maria Angeles Victoria Martinez (Totana, Spain), and Concordia College's Kravchuk, Eliasson, and the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP), Mecchi.

The women's tennis team concludes their fall competition with a 13-2 record; they will resume play in the spring of 2014 with their annual trip to Tampa Bay, Florida.
