Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Fighting Knights, Leaves Florida 4-7

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Boca Raton, Fla. – (2/28/2013) – Chestnut Hill College concluded their annual spring trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Ft. Pierce, Florida, with today's doubleheader at Lynn University. After coming to life a little too late in the opener, The Griffins fell 6-2 in game one to the before splitting the twin bill with some late hitting and a solid bullpen performance in game two.
 
The Griffins squared off against some elite on their spring trip. In their first contest at the Northeast Challenge, on February 22, the Griffins battled #12 Franklin Pierce University to an 11-10, 11-inning final only to lose the night cap with #22 Southern New Hampshire University 15-0. The Griffins then challenged the Ravens to an 8-5 defeat on February 23, before earning their first win of the season with a 6-5 victory over Molloy College in the first competition on February 24. Unfortunately, the Griffins suffered a 17-1 loss to the Penmen before leaving Myrtle Beach with a 1-4 record.
 
In Ft. Pierce, the Griffins split their first two contests with Northwood University (FL), defeating the Seahawks 13-6 before dropping the second game of February 26th's doubleheader 8-1. A day later the Griffins lost 8-0 to #30 Mercyhurst College, but they left Florida Coast Spring Training on a good note as they defeated Queens College 2-1 that evening.
 
Junior Joe Perrotta (Utica, N.Y.) effectively pitched Lynn University (1-1) to a 6-2 win over Chestnut Hill College (4-7) in today's opener. The Fighting Knights scored a run in each of the first four innings and two runs in the fifth inning before the Griffins answered in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman catcher Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) plated two Griffins on a two-out double, but that would be all they could muster against Perrotta (2-2) who went the distance, seven innings, with six strike outs.
 
Senior catcher Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, Pa.) knotted the second game with a two-out fourth-inning double. After a solid 3.1-inning start from sophomore pitcher Seamus Finnegan (Collegeville, Pa.) the Griffins received an outstanding bullpen effort from sophomore pitcher Vincent Manzella (Matawan, N.J.), freshman pitcher Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior pitcher Joseph Crane (Churchville, Pa.), who combined to hold the Fighting Knights to hits over the last 3.2 innings. Crane earned his first save of the season after junior left fielder Joseph Mullin (Warrington, Pa.) singled in the game winning run in the top of the seventh, 3-2. Looby's following sacrifice fly to added the insurance, 4-2.
 
The baseball team returns home before resuming play on Tuesday, March 5, with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Lincoln University.
