3/20/2013 10:33:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/20/2013) – The winning run walked home in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Philadelphia University as the Rams won the affair, 4-3, on a tenth-inning, bases-loaded, beam ball. Senior shortstop Joseph Crane (Churchville, Pa.) and sophomore third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.) gave the Griffins an early lead, 2-0, but the Rams rallied for three runs in the seventh inning, 3-2, and allowed the Griffins to tie the game in the ninth inning, 3-3, before finally defeating the Griffins in the extra frame.

Chestnut Hill College (8-9, 2-1) gave way to Philadelphia University (4-13-1, 1-0) in the seventh inning after securing a 2-0 lead by the third inning, on a first-inning, two-out, single from Crane, 1-0, and a third-inning sacrifice fly from Steen, 2-0. In the seventh inning, the Rams finally got to senior pitcher Robert Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa.), who surrendered three runs on four consecutive, two-out, singles, 3-2.

Down but not out, the Griffins forced extra innings and got Hopkins off the hook with a ninth inning tally. A lead-off single and a stolen base from sophomore right fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) put a runner in scoring position and after a misplayed sacrifice bunt from junior pinch hitter Mark Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) the Griffins were on the corners with no outs. A single to left field from freshman second baseman Brian Happ (Warrington, Pa.) drove McLaughlin home and knotted the contest at 3-3 with plenty outs to spare. Unfortunately, the Griffins would score no more as junior pitcher Joseph Capparelli (Miami, Fla.) shut the door with a play at the plate and a 6-3 double play ball.

In the extra inning, senior pitcher Russell Trojan (Springfield, Pa.) held the Griffins scoreless despite a one-out Steen double. In their half of the frame, the Rams loaded the bases with a lead-off double, an intentional walk, and a single, before plating the winning run crossed on a pinch-hit, beaming of junior John Sczepanski (Lafayette Hill, Pa.). McLaughlin and Happ led the Griffin lineup with two hits apiece while Hopkins held the Rams to three runs over seven innings, despite allowing 13 hits. Sophomore pitcher Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the loss (2-1).

The baseball team plays their next CACC doubleheader at Dominican College on Saturday, March 23. The first game's opening pitch is schedule for 12:00 p.m.
