Griffins Sweep Lions in Return to Latshaw

3/5/2013 7:46:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (3/5/2013) – The Chestnut Hill College baseball team returned home triumphantly this afternoon, as they earned a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln University (PA) with wins of 13-3 and 6-3. The Griffins knocked the Lions around in the opener as they platted eight runs between the second and third innings, before relying on senior Robert Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Dane Gahr (Brick, N.J.) to seal the victory from the mound. Game two saw each side score twice in the first inning, 2-2, before the Griffins took the lead with a run in the second inning, 3-2, and won it with a three-run seventh inning, 6-3.

Chestnut Hill College (6-7) broke the first game open with a five-run second inning. A lead-off double from junior left fielder Joseph Mullin (Warrington, Pa.) and a single to the left-center gap allowed the Griffins to set the table for senior shortstop Joseph Crane (Churchville, Pa.) to plate the first two runs on a throwing error by the Lion third baseman, 2-0. Crane would later score on a balk, 3-0, and the inning did not end until another Lion error allowed sophomore third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.) to knock in two runs with a grounder to first base. Mullin got the Griffins rolling in the third inning as well, drawing a walk and later scoring on a two-run single from sophomore right fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.), 7-0. The Griffins third run of the frame would cross on a grounder to third base off the bat of freshman second baseman Martin Venafro Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.), 8-0. The Lions would finally answer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, 8-2, but five more Griffins crossed between the sixth, 11-3, and seventh innings in the ten-run victory, 13-3.

In game two, the Griffins grinded two runs out of the Lions in the top of the first inning, as a two-out Puskar walk permitted Steen to single and steal, before a wild pitch and single to right field from freshman designated hitter Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) brought two runs across, 2-0. The Lions reciprocated with two runs in the bottom of the frame, 2-2, but the stalemate was short-lived as the Griffins regained the advantage on Puskar's second-inning single, 3-2, and sealed the victory in the top of the seventh inning with three runs on three hits and two Lion errors.

McLaughlin and Hopkins headlined the game one box score, as McLaughlin went 2-for-3 with two runs and four runs-batted-in (RBI) while Hopkins earned his first win (1-1) by holding the Lions to two runs on six hits and a walk. He struck out nine in five inning of work. Looby finished the afternoon 5-for-9 with three runs and three RBI. Steen went 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBI. Due to poor field conditions at Lincoln University (PA), today's doubleheader relocated to Latshaw-McCarthy Field.

The baseball team will officially open Latshaw-McCarthy Field on Tuesday, March 12, when they host the University of the Sciences in a 5:00 p.m., non-conference, contest.
