Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (4/16/2013) – After a slow start, the top of the Chestnut Hill College lineup powered the Griffins to an 8-5 win in the opener of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with the University of the Sciences (USciences). The Devils got revenge in game two, scoring in each of their first four at-bats before holding a home rally off in a 10-6 final. Freshman designated hitter
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) went 4-for-9 and batted in three runs in the twin bill.
USciences (12-19, 4-11) scored four runs in the first inning of game two, two in the second, three in the third, and one in the fourth, wearing through the Chestnut Hill College (14-12, 7-9) pitching staff before the Griffins threatened the Devils 10-3 advantage with a three-run sixth inning. With one down, senior left fielder
Joseph Mullin (Warrington, Pa.) doubled off the left field fence to get the Griffins going in the sixth inning. Junior
Mark Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) pinch ran and quickly moved to third base on a wild pitch before coming home on a single to center field from junior center fielder
Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.), 10-4. Lites then stole second and scored only moments later on a single to right field from senior catcher
Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, Pa.) to cut the lead further, 10-5. After a Devil pitching change, a pop out, and a walk, Looby plated the third Griffin of the at-bat with a single to third base, 10-6. Unfortunately, freshman pitcher T.J. Maiorino (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) soon shut the door for the Devils, earning his first save of the season with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Devils appeared to be in control at the start of the opener as well. The visitors platted a run in the first inning, 1-0, third inning, 2-0, and fifth inning, 3-0, while freshman pitcher C.J. Hertz (Magnolia, N.J.) held the Griffins hitless through three innings and scoreless through four innings. But a four-run fifth inning would give the Griffins a 4-3 advantage. Mullin drew a one-out walk to put the wheels in motion. After a fly out to center field, DiMonte singled Mullin to third base, before a triple from sophomore right fielder
Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) put the Griffins on the scoreboard, 3-2. Freshman first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) followed with a double down the left field line to score McLaughlin, 3-3, and a batter later Looby's infield single brought home the lead, 4-3. From there, the Griffins relied on sophomore pitcher
Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior pitcher
Richard Cavazza (Highland, N.Y.) to deliver the game to graduate pitcher
Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) for another 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and his fourth save of the season.
The baseball team heads to Caldwell College on Saturday, April 20, to face the Cougars in a 2:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
