Box Score Norristown, Pa. – (4/30/2013) – Despite a six-run fifth inning, Chestnut Hill College could not keep pace with the bats of West Chester University, who scored 14 runs on 16 hits in a 14-6 victory. Trailing 7-0 after the top of the fifth inning, the Griffins used a single, a walk, and a hit batsman to ignite a six-run frame. Unfortunately, with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, one in the seventh, and three more in the ninth, the defending National Champions were able to leave Latshaw-McCarthy Field with a win. Prior to the contest, the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics and Recreation recognized the baseball team's Class of 2013 in annual Senior Day proceedings.
West Chester University (19-22-1) built a 3-0 lead with their first two at-bats; using a lead-off walk, and a couple walks to put runners in position for a two-out, two-run single in the first inning, 2-0, before adding a run in the second inning with a lead-off single, a wild pitch, a walk and a balk, 3-0. The Golden Rams looked to distance between themselves from the home team with a four-run top of the fifth, 7-0, but in the bottom of the frame Chestnut Hill College (17-24) got six runs back by making the most of three hits, an error, and a few walks.
Senior shortstop
Joseph Crane (Churchville, Pa.) led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to third base. He quickly advanced to third with a failed pick-off attempt and then scored, along with junior center fielder
Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.), on a two-run single from senior catcher
Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, Pa.), 7-2. A walk and a hit batsman brought another Griffin home, 7-3, and forced a pitching change before freshman designated hitter
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) cleared the bases with a double to left field, 7-6. Unfortunately, the Griffins were unable to add any more runs in the frame or the contest, as the Golden Rams bats eventually went back to work for seven more runs over the final four innings, 14-6.
In annual Senior Day ceremonies, the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics and Recreation recognized DiMonte, graduate pitcher
Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa.), senior pitcher
Robert Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa.), Crane, senior pitcher/outfielder
Ryan Lanzalotto (Downingtown, Pa.), and senior pitcher
Travis Kakareko (Westbury, N.Y.) in their final home contest of their collegiate careers.
The baseball team will conclude their 2013 regular season schedule on Sunday, May 5, with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Army.
