Griffin Runs Come Too Little Too Late In Loss to Devils

4/4/2013 9:41:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/4/2013) – Five runs in the Chestnut Hill College half of the sixth inning would only bring the Griffins within two runs of the University of the Sciences (USciences) as the Devils stockpiled a 7-0 advantage to endure the rally for a 7-5, non-conference, victory. Junior left fielder Joseph Mullin (Warrington, Pa.) recorded two hits (2-for-4) while senior catcher Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, Pa.) provided the clout in the Griffin sixth.

USciences (10-12) wasted no time building their advantage on their home turf at Richie Ashburn Field as the home team scored one run in the first inning and two in the second, before extending their lead with additional tallies coming in the fourth and fifth frames. Back-to-back-to-back two-out singles platted the first Devil run, 1-0, and in the second inning they added two more runs with a double and a couple Chestnut Hill College (9-15) errors, 3-0. In the fifth inning three more Devil runs crossed on three hits and another Griffins error, 6-0, and in the fifth inning they added one more run with another two-out single, 7-0.

The Griffins finally got to the Devils starter, freshman pitcher T.J. Maiorino (Mt. Laurel, N.J), in the top of the sixth inning. A lead-off single from sophomore right fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a following double from freshman first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) allowed the Griffins to score their first two runs on an error by the Devil second baseman, 7-2. As the at-bat continued, the Griffins loaded the bases with two outs on a one-out single to senior third baseman Raymond Puskar (Green Lane, Pa.), a fielder's choice, a walk to junior center fielder Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.), and a Mullin single. DiMonte then brought all three of his teammates home with a double to right field, 7-5, but the rally would end there as the Devil bullpen ending the frame two batters later.

Maiorino (1-1) earned the win for USciences despite allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a walk. Freshman pitcher Michael Janas (Hatboro, Pa.) was the savior, providing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season. For the Griffins, freshman pitcher Robert Andris (Oreland, Pa.) and sophomore pitcher Seamus Finnegan (Collegeville, Pa.) gave quality effort out of the bullpen. In 3.1 innings of work, Andris allowed one earned run on three hits and a walk while Finnegan struck out one in a perfect bottom of the eighth.

The baseball team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule this Saturday, April 6, with a 12:00 p.m. home doubleheader against Bloomfield College.
