Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Dane Gahr (Brick, N.J.) kept the Bloomfield College bats quiet, freshman designated hitter
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) provided the punch in the middle of the Chestnut Hill College lineup. He went 3-for-4 with two runs-batted-in (RBI) in the opener and 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second game to help the Griffins to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victories of 6-2 and 2-1, respectively. Both Raia and Gahr went six innings strong in their starts.
Sophomore right fielder
Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the first Chestnut Hill College (11-15, 4-4) at-bat with a double and he wasted no time coming home, rounding the bases and crossing the plate on a RBI double from freshman first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), 1-0. After a Looby single, a sacrifice from senior third baseman
Raymond Puskar (Green Lane, Pa.) moved two Griffins into scoring position, but only Campion would score, reaching home on a single to second base by sophomore second baseman
Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.), 2-0. The Griffins added three more runs in the fifth inning with the first of three consecutive walks being drawn by junior center fielder
Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.). He and McLaughlin would score on Looby's one-out single to left field and the third Griffin run of the frame would cross on a Puskar sacrifice fly to give the home team a 5-0 edge. Bloomfield College (4-16, 3-7) threatened with two runs in the sixth inning, 5-2, but the Griffins insurance came in the eighth inning on a run-scoring Steen single, 6-2. Raia (3-2) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk; he struck out three in the win (3-2).
Looby knocked in the Griffins first run of game two, brining home Campion with a one-out single down the right field line, 1-0. Lites made it a 2-0 Griffin lead in the bottom of the fifth frame, leading the at-bat off with a double, advancing to third base on a sacrifice from senior catcher
Timothy DiMonte (Downingtown, Pa.), and scoring on a passed ball. Meanwhile, Gahr (2-3) struck out three while holding the Deacons to one run on six hits and two walks. A hitless bullpen effort from graduate pitcher
Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior pitcher
Joseph Crane (Churchville, Pa.) took care or the rest, Crane collecting his third save (3) with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth.
The baseball team takes no rest as they travel to Dominican College tomorrow, Sunday, April 7, to play the Chargers in a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
