Griffins Fall to #1 Wildcats, To Face #5 Golden Falcons in Elimination Game

5/10/2013 6:19:00 PM

Box Score Wilmington, Del. – (5/10/2013) – #1 Wilmington University wasted to time seizing the advantage in the second game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament competition. The Wildcats used a lead-off walk and three first-inning triples go grab a 3-0 lead before defeating #6 Chestnut Hill College 10-0. In the early game, #5 Felician College earned the right to play the Griffins in this evening's 6:00 p.m. “loser-go-home” contest as they eliminated #2 Dominican College (NY) with a 2-0 victory. The Wildcats await the winner of the Griffin and Golden Falcon matchup in an 11:00 a.m. CACC Championship Game, tomorrow, May 11.

After taking the initial advantage, Wilmington University (39-12) quickly made it 5-0 with two second-inning runs on two hits and a Chestnut Hill College (19-26) error. The deficit reached 8-0 after the Wildcats drew two; two-out walks and enjoyed an inside-the-park homer from senior shortstop Jonathan Rodriguez (Jersey Coty, N.J.). Sophomore pitcher Vincent Manzella (Matawan, N.J.) settled the Wildcats in the middle innings, while the Griffins had their best opportunity in the seventh frame. Unfortunately, back-to-back lead-off singles were rendered fruitless by the sustaining strong pitching of sophomore Ray Gambone (King of Prussia, Pa.), who endured for a 10-0 victory.

Over eight innings, Gambone (8-1) struck out five and walked one to help lead the Wildcats to victory. He got plenty of support from his lineup, which was led by Rodriguez's three runs-batted-in (RBI) on two triples and inside-the-park homerun.

In the middle of the Griffin order, junior third baseman Raymond Puskar (Green Lane, Pa.) and sophomore second baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.) each recorded two hits. Freshman pitcher Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) took the loss (1-4).
