Box Score Wilmington, Del. – (5/10/2013) – Defeating #5 Felician College, 13-6, in tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) elimination game, #6 Chestnut Hill College earned the right to challenge #1 Wilmington University for the league championship. After struggling to score against the Wildcats in their first game, the Griffin woke up for 12 runs on 11 hits and five Golden Falcon errors in the nightcap.
Felician College (21-32) put the contest's first runs on the scoreboard in the third inning, using four one-out hits, including a triple from junior shortstop Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla.), to build a 2-0 advantage. The Chestnut Hill College (20-26) bats awoke in the fourth inning, putting five runs on the scoreboard for senior pitcher
Robert Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa.). A lead-off walk to freshman first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) got the Griffin fourth started. Back-to-back-to-back doubles from freshman designated
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), junior third baseman
Raymond Puskar (Green Lane, Pa.), and sophomore second baseman
Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.) gave the Griffins the lead, 3-2, before a single from junior center fielder
Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a sacrifice fly from senior shortstop
Joseph Crane (Churchville, Pa.) increased the lead to 5-2.
Two more lead-off walks allowed the Griffins to add another run in the top of the fifth inning, 6-2, leaving a comfortable advantage for graduate pitcher
Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) (3-1). The Griffins bullpen ace did his job, holding the Golden Falcons scoreless over the next three frames while the spread advanced to 8-2 on a sixth-inning, two-out error and a seventh-inning, one-out Puskar walk and a Steen double. A long eighth inning saw each side score four runs to leave the spread at 12-6 heading to the final frame. There, the Griffin added one more run for good measure, 13-6, then handed the game over to Steen for the final three outs.
After earning a record 20
th win, the baseball team will face Wilmington University for the CACC crown tomorrow, May 11. First pitch in the CACC Championship is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Frawley Stadium, with a 2:00 p.m. game scheduled, if necessary.
