11/1/2014 4:26:00 PM

Box Score Orangeburg, N.Y. – (11/1/2014) – In today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match, Dominican College led nearly the whole way in the opening set, 25-17, and used the momentum outlast Chestnut Hill College in a highly competitive second set, 28-26. Behind a .364 (9K-1E-22TA) hitting percentage, the Griffins clawed their way back into the fray, topping the Lady Chargers 25-8 in a runaway third set and evening the match with a 25-15 victory in the fourth set. The afternoon's resolution rested on the outcome of the deciding frame which knotted as late as 14-14 before the Lady Chargers stole set-victory and the match, 3-2, with an ace and a kill, 16-14.

Sophomore outside hitter McKenzie John (Lafayette, La.) carried Dominican College (15-7, 11-6) early, killing seven sets in the Lady Chargers opening 25-17 win. The home team gradually pulled away from Chestnut Hill College (13-15, 8-9), leading by as many as eight points, 11-3, before winning the set by the same margin, 25-17 (1-0). The Griffins took the lead in the second frame, leading as late as 24-23 until the frontcourt play of John spurred the Lady Chargers for a 28-26 win, 2-0. Determined to defeat the Lady Chargers, the Griffins gave their opponents no chance in the third set where they rode the serve of sophomore libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) to a 14-2 lead that eventually resulted in a 25-8 win, 2-1. The match evened up in the fourth set as the Griffins used their runaway win to secure a 25-15 win, 2-2.

The afternoon's climax came in the final frame. The Griffins trailed early, 11-6, but fought back behind senior right side Kaitlyn Schock (Allentown, Pa.) and junior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.), who willed the set even at 12-12. After a Lady Charger point, 13-12, two more Biro kills put the Griffins in the catbird seat, 14-13. Unfortunately, the match lasted for three more points instead of one as a Griffin service error, a Lady Charger ace, and a John kill ended the set, 16-14, and the match in the Lady Chargers favor, 3-2.

John killed an astounding 37 kills on a .240 (37K-14E-96TA) hitting percentage. She also recorded two aces, 19 digs, and a block in a 39.5-point performance. Her efforts were supported by 50 combined assists from sophomore setter Kera Dexter (Selah, Wash.) (27) and junior setter Amanda Hallstein (Holtsville, N.Y.) (23). Sophomore libero Angela Kim (Marlton. N.J.) led four Lady Chargers in double-digit digs with her 27 total digs.

The Griffins had three finish in double-digit kills. Biro led the group with 16 kills, but Schock and  freshman middle hitter Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) were much more efficient with their attacks, both killing 12 points with respective .647 (12K-1E-17TA) and .462 (12K-0E-26TA) hitting percentages. Junior setter junior setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) supplied 46 assists while finishing as one of five Griffins in double-digit digs with 13. Sophomore outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) led that group with 26 digs while Shunk and Schock contributed to the defensive effort by splitting six blocks.

The women's volleyball team continues their fight to reach the CACC postseason on Wednesday, November 5, when they visit Holy Family University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
