First-Inning Runs Enough for Raia, But Devils Deal in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/10/2014) – Chestnut Hill College gave junior pitcher Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) all the run support he would need in their first at-bat of the afternoon as the Griffin ace worked his way in and out of trouble during a 7-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over the University of the Sciences (USciences). Sophomore pitcher Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) was not as fortunate, as the Devils split the doubleheader with a 4-1 win.

Chestnut Hill College (11-11, 8-4) had their chances to match USciences (4-22, 2-8) game-two production, but they were unable to capitalize on eight innings from Crim and a 3-for-3 effort from junior right fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.). A third-inning, lead-off double from senior centerfielder Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.), a McLaughlin sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly from senior second baseman Mark Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the contest's first run, 1-0, but it would be the only one the Griffins could muster against sophomore pitcher C.J. Hertz (Magnolia, N.J.), who spread eight hits and a walk over the complete-game effort. Meanwhile, his teammates scored runs in the fourth, 1-1, fifth, 3-1, and eighth innings to earn a 4-1 victory.

McLaughlin reached on an error in the Griffins first at-bat of the afternoon. And after an infield single from Woltemate, a single up the middle from sophomore leftfielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J) the Griffins were on the scoreboard, 1-0. A sacrifice fly from junior third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.) and a double to right center field from sophomore catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) brought the inning run total to four, 4-0, and provided enough coverage for Raia, who earned the win (5-1). The Griffins would score two more runs in the sixth inning, 6-0, and one in the seventh, 7-0, while Raia spread seven hits and a walk over six innings of work.

The baseball team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, April 12, with a 1:00 p.m. home doubleheader against Dominican College.
