Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (9/20/2014) – Chestnut Hill College continued their winning ways with their fourth straight 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21) victory coming in this afternoon's match against Salem International University. The Griffins controlled the match from the opening serve, but needed to pull away midway through each set to defeat the Tigers. Junior outside hitter
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) headlined the victorious effort with 13 kills on a .355 (13K-2E-31TA) hitting percentage.
The opening set established the tone for the afternoon with Salem International University (0-7) and Chestnut Hill College (7-6) exchanging points to a 10-10 stalemate. But, after a few Tigers hitting errors and a pair of aces from freshman outside hitter
Justine Ganan (San Diego, Calif.), the Griffins separated for a seven-point edge, 19-12, that eventually earned them a nine-point win, 25-16. Like the first set, the second was knotted at 10-10 and again Tigers errors gave the Griffins the break they needed to gain a 20-15 edge and an eventual 25-17 win. Another mid-set rally would earn the Griffins victory as the home team established an 18-13 advantage before holding off the Tigers in a 25-21 third-set win.
The Tigers were balanced up front with five players sharing 13 assists from freshman setter Gitana Cafasso (Pueblo, Colo.). Sophomore libero Jen Martinez (Lakewood, Colo.) led their defensive effort with 12 digs.
Ganan and junior defensive specialist
Meghan Chiovitti (Brighton, Colo.) each scored three aces to lead the Griffins seven-ace effort, but it was Biro's spectacular hitting performance that carried them to victory. Junior setter
Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) supplied 25 assists to the Griffins strikers, while sophomore libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) led three Griffins in double-digit digs with 18; sophomore outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded 15 digs in addition to eight kills and an ace, while Chiovitti hustled to a dozen digs (12).
The women's volleyball team returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with their next match; a 7:00 p.m. contest versus Philadelphia University on Wednesday, September 24.
