Women’s Volleyball Drops Season-Opening Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - (9/5/2014) – The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a pair of setbacks on the first day of competition at Millersville University's Marauder Clash today, suffering a 3-0 sweep (17-25, 22-25, 20-25) at the hands of Shippensburg University before falling 3-1 (22-25, 25-27, 25-23, 20-25) to Stonehill College. Sophomore outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) and sophomore setter Emily Drew (Ringoes, N.J.) each posted double-doubles in the nightcap to lead the Griffins.
 
Chestnut Hill College (0-2) upped its play in the second match, but was unable to get over the hump in four tightly contested sets against Stonehill College (2-0). After dropping a 27-25 marathon second set to fall into a 2-0 hole, the Griffins fought back to take the third set, 25-23, but the Skyhawks closed out the match with a 25-20 decision in the fourth set. McBride and Drew were the top performers for the Griffins, with the former going for 11 kills and 16 digs and the latter posting 32 assists and 15 digs. Fellow sophomore, libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) provided 22 digs to lead the defense, while McBride's attacking was complemented by a strong performance from junior captain Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.), who contributed a team-high 15 kills in addition to one solo block and two block assists. Senior captain Kaitlyn Schock (Allentown, Pa.) had two solo blocks and assisted on another, also adding three kills from her right side spot.
 
Freshman middle hitter Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) offered a strong outing, accumulating four kills and leading the blocking output with three solos and three assists. Fellow rookie Peyton Reno (Wilmington, DE) finished with nine digs and an ace, and sophomore defensive specialist Meghan Chiovitti (Brighton, Colo.) matched Reno's dig output and added a team-high three aces.
 
In the early match, junior setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) finished with 12 assists, while Trabosh contributed a team-high 16 digs against the Shippensburg University (1-1) attack. McBride had four kills, six digs, and a block assist, and Biro led the defensive effort with three solo blocks to go along with three kills on offense. A trio of Griffin freshmen made their collegiate debuts: Reno posted six digs, Shunk had a kill and an ace, and Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Az.) chipped in three kills and a block assist. Chiovitti (three digs, one ace) and fellow junior defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.), who added a pair of digs, saw some action on the backline.
 
The Griffins are back in action tomorrow with two more matches, starting with an 11:00 a.m. contest against Virginia Union University before closing the tournament with a 3:00 p.m. showdown against the host Marauders.
