Brookville, N.Y. - (4/13/2015) – Bidding to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) East Regional match for the third straight year, the Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team took two of three doubles matches against fourth-seeded Goldey-Beacom College this morning. Unfortunately, the Lightning proved dominant in singles play, taking four of the five completed individual matchups to secure a 5-3 victory, their third over the fifth-seeded Griffins this season, in a battle of nationally ranked Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foes. Senior
Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) had a hand in two of the three points for Chestnut Hill College, which saw its season come to an end with a 16-9 overall record.
After #38 Goldey-Beacom College (17-4) jumped out to a fast start with an 8-0 victory at third doubles, #34 Chestnut Hill College bounced back in style, capturing the other two flights to gain the upper hand heading into the singles portion of the proceedings. Dawson and freshman
Laure-Anne Josso (Vannes, France) levelled the tilt with an 8-5 decision at first doubles, and junior
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) teamed with freshman
Lara Scholtze (Bod Homburg, Germany) to form a potent pairing, cruising 8-3 on the second court to garner the Griffins a 2-1 advantage.
A 6-0, 6-0 victory by sophomore Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) at fifth singles knotted the fray at 2-2 and set the tone for Lightning in the ensuing individual fray. Goldey-Beacom College freshman Laura Moreno (Murcia, Spain) got the better of the nationally ranked Josso (6-3, 6-3) on the top court before Dawson answered the call with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 triumph at number two, bringing the match even for a third time at 3-3. The Lightning were the stronger closers, however, winning in straight sets at fourth and sixth singles to advance to meet top-seeded host New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) tomorrow morning with a berth in the "Sweet Sixteen" on the line.
Chestnut Hill College concludes the 2014-2015 season with an overall record of 16-9 after compiling a 6-2 mark in CACC play during the fall.
