Griffin Rally Spoiled As Skyhawks Walk-Off In Final Game at Northeast Challenge

2/28/2016 9:37:00 PM

Box Score Myrtle Beach, S.C. – (2/28/2016) – Chestnut Hill College wrapped up their time at the Northeast Challenge today, Sunday, February 28, with a contest opposite Stonehill College. A two-out, two-run, seventh-inning triple from junior right fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) and a two-out, two-run, ninth-inning home run from senior left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) brought the Griffins even, 6-6, before heading to the Skyhawks final at-bat. There, Stonehill College took advantage of the Griffin bullpen, using two singles, a stolen base, and two hit batsman to capture a 7-6 walk-off win.

Stonehill College (2-3) put their first runs on the scoreboard in the second inning with a one-out walk, a single, a triple by senior center fielder Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass.), and a single from junior third baseman Steve Lee (Braintree, Mass.) platting three Skyhawks, 3-0. Chestnut Hill College (1-3) cut into that margin in their next at-bat as freshman third baseman Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) singled to third base and advanced to second on a sacrifice before a single from junior right fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) brought him home, 3-1. But the Skyhawks reestablished their advantage at 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as a Griffin pitching change, a one-out double down the left field line, a hit batsman, a two-out double down the right field line, another beanball, and an error by the third baseman allowed two more runs to cross.

In the sixth inning, a Looby walk, a wild pitch, and a Slagle sacrifice fly decreased the difference to 5-2. The Scarlet and Gold built upon that run, adding two runs in the seventh inning with a two-out single from sophomore second baseman Alex Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), a hit batsman, and Monaghan's triple bringing home two runs, 5-4. The Skyhawks got one run back in the bottom of the eighth inning with a one-out Lee solo shot, 6-4, but Looby's ninth-inning blast brought all things even, 6-6, heading to the final regulation at-bat. Unfortunately, a pair of hits and a couple hit batsmen gave the Shyhawks a 7-6 walk-off win.

Craig (2-for-4) and Szumigala (2-of-4) each recorded two hits while Monaghan went 4-for-5 with a run scored and three runs-batted-in (RBI). The Griffins used eight pitchers in all; junior Justin Harnett (Aberdeen, N.J.) saw the most success, allowing one hit and striking out one in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team departs from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to travel to Miami Shores, Florida, for a 6:00 p.m. contest at Barry University on Tuesday, March 1.
