Buccaneers Bats Strike Early, Beat Griffins in First of Two

3/1/2016 10:41:00 PM

Box Score Miami Shores, Fla. – (3/1/2016) – In the first of two dates at Barry University, Chestnut Hill College found themselves in an uphill battle as the hosting Buccaneers scored three runs in the first inning, six runs in the second inning, and a run in the third inning to put the Griffins behind an early 10-0 deficit. The Scarlet and Gold scored twice in the sixth inning, but only stranded three more runners between the eighth and ninth innings to fall short in a 10-2 final. Juniors, shortstop Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) and right fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) each recorded two hits, the latter knocking in a run in the sixth inning along with senior designated hitter Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.).

A two-out, three-run home run did the damage in the first inning, 3-0. Barry University (10-6) followed it up with six runs in the second. The first came on a one-out solo shot, 4-0, and after that a single, a stolen base, and a pair of walks loaded the bases. A single to left field brought home one run, 5-0, a single through the right side brought home two more, 7-0, before the wheels fell off with a pair of passed balls, a walk, a hit batsman, and a sacrifice fly pushed the difference to 9-0. The Buccaneers added one more run in the third inning to push their advantage to double-digits, 10-0, and leaving Chestnut Hill College (1-4) scrambling to manufacture a rally. The Griffins' sixth inning started with a pitching change and a couple defensive replacements. A one-out single from sophomore second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) put the first runner aboard and after a wild pitch, and a Monaghan single up the middle the Scarlet and Gold were on the scoreboard, 10-1. Another wild pitch and a Looby single to right field put another tally up, 10-2, but the inning ended on a strikeout, before succeeding eighth and ninth-inning rallies came up shy of their goal.

Freshman designated hitter Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) and junior third baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) recorded the other two Griffin hits. Junior pitcher Justin Harnett (Aberdeen, N.J.) took the loss (0-2) while freshmen pitchers Vincent Togno III (Phoenixville, Pa.), Dan Venella (Runnemede, N.J.), and Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) combined for 5.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team looks to get their revenge tomorrow, Wednesday, March 2, when they rematch Barry University in a 6:00 p.m.
