Golden Knights End Griffins Win Streak In First of Three Contests

3/12/2016 4:58:00 PM

Box Score Norristown, Pa. – (3/12/2016) – In the first of three meetings, Chestnut Hill College and the College of St. Rose faced off today, March 12, at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. The Golden Knights led off the contest with back-to-back extra base hits, added a run in the sixth inning, and four more in their final at-bat to outweigh a Griffin run in the third and a seventh-inning solo shot from senior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.). Campion was one of five Griffins to record a hit while sophomore pitcher Matthew Kress (Lansdale, Pa.) took the loss (1-2) despite only allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out five.

A lead-off double followed by a triple to right field, got the College of St. Rose (2-8) out to an early lead, 1-0. A ground out to short brought home another Golden Knight run, 2-0, but Kress retired the next two batters to put an end to a potential big frame. In the third inning, a one-out single through the right side from freshman third baseman Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) gave Chestnut Hill College (6-9) their first hit of the contest. A double to right center from junior shortstop Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) moved Szumigala to third base, placing two runners in scoring position for a run-scoring, ground-out to second base from sophomore second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), 2-1. But the Golden Knights stopped the Griffins there and got the run back in the sixth inning with a lead-off single through the left side, a wild pitch, another single through the left single, loading the bases for run scoring fielder's choice, 3-1. Campion's second home run of the season cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh inning, but even after a Slagle double to left field the Griffins would get no closer with fourth ninth-inning tallies sending the Golden Knights to a 7-2 victory.

Chestnut Hill College will look for revenge when they visit the College of St. Rose for a pair of games on Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26. The Griffins finish their first home stand of the season with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader versus Kutztown University on Wednesday, March 12.
