Box Score Albany, N.Y. – (3/25/2016) – The action began in the third inning of today's series-opener at the College of St. Rose, as Chestnut Hill College pushed the contest's first run across before a three-run at-bat spurred the Golden Knights for an eventual 4-3 victory. The Griffins received a couple of hits from senior left fielder
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), junior catcher
Christopher Demey (Phoenixville, Pa.), and freshman third baseman
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), while sophomore
Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) and junior
Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) combined to hold the Golden Knights to four earned runs on six hits and three walks.
Chestnut Hill College (10-11) used a Demey lead-off single, some heads-up base running, and a ground-out from sophomore second baseman
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) to manufacture the first run of the afternoon, 1-0. But in the bottom of the frame, the College of St. Rose (3-8) fired back with a lead-off walk facilitating three runs after a run-scoring ground out to second base, 1-1, and two-out, two-run home run from junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland (Elmira Heights, N.Y.), 3-1. The Golden Knights added another insurance tally in their next at-bat, which proved resourceful as the Griffins looked to come back in the top of the eighth inning. There, Looby began a two-out rally with a single to left field. It was followed with a single through the right side from junior right fielder
Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) and a two-run Szumigala double to right center that brought the Scarlet and Gold back within one run, 4-3. Unfortunately, senior Joe Pokrentowski (Syracuse, N.Y.) served as the Golden Knights' stopper, striking out the last Griffin to bat in the eighth before retiring the ninth-inning lineup in order.
Senior designated hitter
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) accounted for the remaining Griffin hit with his first-inning double. Kelley took the loss (2-2), allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six. DiBonaventure provided two innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit while striking out one.
Chestnut Hill College continues their three-game stand against the Golden Knights tomorrow, Saturday, March 26, with an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader.
