Griffins Drop Pair of One-Run CACC Games to Chargers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (4/13/2016) – In today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, Chestnut Hill College dropped a pair of one-run games to Dominican College, who rallied for wins in the ninth inning of both contest, 5-4 and 7-6. Freshman third baseman Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) recorded two hits in the opener while senior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), senior left field Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), and sophomore pinch hitter Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) record two runs-batted-in (RBI) in the nightcap.
 
Down 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore designated hitter Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) rallied Chestnut Hill College (15-6, 6-4) for the first of two runs with a lead-off double to left field. He reached home soon after on a one-out double to center field from freshman catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.), 4-3. Sophomore pinch runner Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) took Gilham's place and immediately followed Owens on a triple by Szumigala, 4-4. Dominican College (11-20, 5-5) answered with the winning a run in top of the ninth inning after a lead-off walk senior first baseman Carlos Lopez (Miami, Fla.), a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch, and a two-out pinch hit single, 5-4. Szumigala recorded two hits (2-for-3) while senior pitcher Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) figured in a no decision despite holding the Chargers to three earned runs on then hits. He struck out two.
 
Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game, Szumigala reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third base after junior shortstop Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) doubled to left field. Both scored a run on a double up the middle from Isaac to help the Griffins take a 6-4 lead. The Chargers once again rallied in the top of the ninth inning, this time scoring three runs on a three singles, a Griffin error, and a sacrifice fly, 7-6. Looby was 3-for-5 while sophomore pitcher Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) also figured into a no decision despite holding the Chargers to two earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out six.
 
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, April 16, with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Wilmington University.
