Chestnut Hill College Commands Jefferson University in 3-1 CACC Win

Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball 2017
Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/3/2017) – With their honored professors and the spirit of GriffinNation behind them, Chestnut Hill College overpowered the defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Champion, Jefferson University in tonight's Faculty Appreciation Night affair by a 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-14) final. The Scarlet and Gold was on its mark from the onset, 25-16 and 25-18, and recovered from a 25-20 third-set setback with a decisive 25-14 victory in the fourth frame. Outside hitters, freshman outside hitter Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) both reached double digits kills; the former added two blocks for a team-high 19.5 points, while the latter was one of two Griffins with three aces and one of five Griffins with at least 10 digs.

Chestnut Hill College (4-13, 3-4) separated from Jefferson University (11-6, 6-1) for a 14-9 advantage on Byxbee's first round of service. With the momentum in hand, the Scarlet and Gold pushed their advantage to seven points, 20-13, by the Ram timeout. But the break did not help the visitors as the Griffins eventually took the frame by a 25-16 measure. Byxbee opened the second set with six straight scoring serves, 6-0. The run forced another Ram timeout and carried the Griffins to another victory as Chestnut Hill College led 20-10 on a Byxbee ace and grabbed their second match point on a kill from sophomore middle hitter Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.), 25-18. The Griffins only briefly led in the third set as the Rams felt their backs against the wall in a 25-20 victory. But the visitor's rally was short lived as Chestnut Hill College put the finishing touches on a valuable CACC victory with a 25-14 fourth-set triumph.

Junior outside hitter Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa.) and senior middle hitter Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa.) both reached double digit kills for Jefferson University. Justus paired her 10 kills with an assist, 16 digs, and three blocks. Wensel added an assist, an ace, nine digs, and a block to her team-high 13 kills. Junior setter Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md.) offered 29 assists and eight digs, while freshman libero Meghan Patterson (Aston, Pa.) totaled an assist, an ace, and 16 digs.

Kalala finished 18 kills on a team-high .371 (18K-5E-35TA) hitting percentage. She also recorded two digs and two blocks (1 solo, 1 assist). Byxbee totaled a dozen (12) kills and a dozen digs in addition to her three aces. Junior setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) also recorded three aces in excess of a kill, 43 assists, and 10 digs.

The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team continues their CACC schedule on Friday, October 6, when they visit Wilmington University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
