Box Score Miami Shores, Fla. - (3/7/2017) – Looking to atone for a six-run third inning, Chestnut Hill College platted six runs of their own between the fifth and sixth innings of this evening's contest at Barry University. Still, the Buccaneers owned an 8-6 lead that translated to an eventual 10-7 win after some late-game tallies. Junior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) continues his torrid hitting with the more hits (3-for-3) in today's affair. He knocked in five Griffin runs, one with a fifth-inning single, three with a sixth-inning double, and one more with a seventh-inning walk.
Barry University (8-11) used a lead-off single, a walk, a hit batsman, a double-play, and a two-out error to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning, 2-0. Four hits and three more Chestnut Hill College (2-2) errors later the Buccaneers led 8-0 after their third at-bat.
The Griffins finally cut into that advantage in the fifth inning, when senior second baseman
Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second base on an interference call before scoring on a Craig infield single, 8-1. Craig became Chestnut Hill College's second run after a walk to senior left fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) and an overthrow at third base on the ensuing double steal, 8-2.
The Scarlet and Gold continued their rally in the sixth inning with sophomore center fielder
Vincent Case (Southampton, Pa.) walking and stealing his way to third base before two more walks and a two-out double from Craig trimmed the deficit to three runs, 8-5. DiBona's succeeding single reduced it a run further, 8-6.
In the seventh inning, walks to Case and sophomore catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) put two Griffins aboard with no outs. A sacrificed bunt and a walk later, Chestnut Hill College had the bases loaded with only one mark against them. Unfortunately, a pair of strike outs bookended a walk to Craig, leaving the Griffins a run behind, 8-7, as Buccaneer insurance came in the bottom of the seventh, 9-7, and eighth, 10-7, innings.
Sophomore designated hitter
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.) was responsible for the last Griffin hit (1-for-3). Out of the bullpen, freshman
Nicholas Smalley (Blue Bell, Pa.), freshman
Jerry Mangan (Wayne, Pa.), sophomore
Anthony Vlahovic (New Hope, Pa.), and junior
Pat Geraghty (Morristown, N.J.) combined to hold the Buccaneers to two runs on three hits and three walks.
Spring trip competition continues tomorrow, Wednesday, March 8, for Chestnut Hill College, who visits Lynn University for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
