Box Score Boca Raton, Fla. - (3/8/2017) – Chestnut Hill College continued their early spring competition in Florida today, Wednesday, March 8, with an afternoon contest at #23 Lynn University. The Fighting Knights showed their strength from the first pitch, plating three runs in the first inning and 11 more after the Griffins tied the contest with their second-inning at-bat. The result was a 14-5 final in the home team's favor.

Junior first baseman
Matt Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) recorded two (2-for-4) of the Scarlet and Gold's five hits. Junior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) recorded one of those and walked four times to tie the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II record for most consecutive times on-base (Douglas Hargett, North Ala. (eight hits, six walks, one hit by pitch), April 18-23, 2002).

Facing a 3-0 deficit when they came to the plate in the top of the second inning, Chestnut Hill College (2-3) put bat to ball. Owens led off the at-bat with a double down the left field line. It was followed by a bunt single from sophomore center fielder
Vincent Case (Southampton, Pa.) that brought Owens home after a throwing error by the Fighting Knights, 3-1. Case then stole second base and eventually third base before a walk and second Lynn University throwing error ushered him home, 3-2. The Fighting Knights' fielding woes continued, as a third throwing error and a walk to senior left fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) loaded the bases and permitted another Griffin run to score, 3-3.

Unfortunately, Lynn University (14-6) was able to recreate their first-inning success in their second at-bat, plating three more runs to own a 6-3 lead heading to the third inning. There, Chestnut Hill College was able to get one run back on a sacrifice fly from sophomore third baseman
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), 6-4, before the Fighting Knights created some distance with a three-run third inning, 9-4, a two-run sixth inning, 11-4, and a three-run eighth inning, 14-5. The final Griffin run was the product of a hits batsman, a one-out single from Craig, and a fifth Fighting Knight error in the top of the eighth inning.

Chestnut Hill College will take a day off before their next contests as respective 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. games versus Northwood University and West Virginia Wesleyan College are schedule for Friday, March 10.
