Box Score 2 Ponoma, N.Y. - (4/24/2017) – Sophomore designated hitter
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) served as the hero of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at PCU Park in Panoma, New York. His two-out double to left center scored the necessary runs for Chestnut Hill College to defeat Dominican College by a 3-1 final in the nightcap. Unfortunately, The Chargers took the first game by a 5-4 final thanks to a series ninth-inning base hits.
A two-out single in the first inning gave Dominican College (15-23, 10-10) a 1-0 lead in game one. Chestnut Hill College (19-14-1, 13-6) answered in the fourth inning with a pair of lead-off singles from sophomore catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) and junior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), a one-out wild pitch, a run-scoring grounder to second base from senior right fielder
Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.), 1-1, and a two-out wild pitch, 2-1. Unfortunately, the Griffin lead was gone by the end of the fourth inning, 2-2, leaving a fifth-inning wild pitch to put them back ahead in the fifth inning, 3-2. But game knotted again in the seventh, 3-3, before the Scarlet and Gold reemerged in the ninth inning. There, a lead-off home run from Monaghan – his first of the season – gave Chestnut Hill College a 4-3 edge only to be outdone by the Chargers' last ups, 5-4.
The Scarlet and Gold got their revenge in game two, where an extra inning was needed for the Griffin offense to come to the support of junior
Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.). The Chargers scored their only run against Sibson (6-0) early, in fact it was a two-out solo home run that gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Chestnut Hill College tied it in the third inning, where sophomore center fielder
Vincent Case (Southampton, Pa.) manufactured a run with a lead-off single, a stolen base, a move to third base on a grounder to short, and a hustle home on a two-out wild pitch, 1-1. The winning runs were added in the eighth inning. Gilham got that at-bat going with a single up the middle. He was eventually relieved at first base by freshman pinch runner
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), who stole second one his own before joining Monaghan for a double steal, and a crossing of home on Szumigala's two-run double to left center, 3-1. Gilham had three hits (3-for-4) hits in the game. Szumigala (2-for-4) had two. Sibson allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven in the complete game effort.
Chestnut Hill College plays next on Friday, April 28, when they visit Philadelphia University for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
