Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/3/2017) – Junior
Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) dazzled the Devils for seven innings in the opener of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against the University of the Sciences (USciences), striking out 12 while his teammates generated the necessary runs for a 3-1 triumph. Unfortunately, the Devils spoiled the sweep, pushing game two to extra innings with three runs in the seventh inning, 7-7, and winning it with a walk-off triple in the eighth inning, 8-7. Senior left fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) was 3-for-4 with a run and a run-batted-in (RBI), while sophomore catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) and senior second baseman
Jon Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) both knocked in a pair.
With a game in hand on USciences (7-17, 4-10), Chestnut Hill College (8-9-1, 4-3) owned a 6-2 lead after their fifth at-bat of game two. They got there with three first-inning runs off singles from Gilham and sophomore designated hitter
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), 3-0, a DiBona sacrifice fly and an RBI-single from senior right field
Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) in the fourth inning, 5-2, and a fortunate Devil error in the fifth inning, 6-2. The home team began their rally in the bottom of that frame with a two-run home run, 6-4. After Baturgil singled in senior third baseman
Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) in the top of the seventh inning, 7-4, the Devil rally continued as a lead-off single and a walk led to three runs and extra innings, 7-7. In the eighth inning, the home team capitalized on a Griffin error, using a pinch hit triple from senior Mike Pollastrelli (Williamstown, N.J.) to win the contest, 8-7.
Despite giving up a run in the first inning of the twin bill, Sibson was stellar. He struck out the side in the second and fourth innings, meanwhile, a two-out, second-inning double from sophomore center fielder
Vincent Case (Southampton, Pa.) tied the contest, 1-1. The Griffins separated with two runs in the seventh inning. The first came around after a lead-off walk to freshman centerfielder
Justin McFadden (Galloway, N.J.), a hit batsman, a passed, ball, a walk, and a sacrifice fly from junior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), 2-1. The second, after a wild pitch, and a Gilham grounder that was misplayed by the Devil third baseman, 3-1. Sophomore
Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) relived Sibson in the eighth inning; he earned his second save of the season, holding USciences to one hit over the final two frames.
Chestnut Hill College's CACC schedule continues tomorrow, Tuesday, April 3, when the Scarlet and Gold returns to Latshaw-McCarthy Field to host Philadelphia University in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
