Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 New Castle, Del. - (4/7/2017) – A little more than a week removed from splitting a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Wilmington University, Chestnut Hill College traveled New Castle, Delaware, to face the Wildcats in a non-conference twin bill. Despite a chill in the air, the Griffin offense was full effect, defeating the home side by a 13-8 final in the opener and a 6-3 final in the nightcap.  Junior shortstop Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), junior first baseman Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), and sophomore third baseman Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) each recorded two hits in the first game; Owens knocked in four runs, but sophomore designated hitter Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.) was one better with five runs-batted-in (RBI). In game two, Owens and senior right field Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) both knocked in two runs with only a hit between them.

Wilmington University (16-12) struck first in game one, scoring three runs in their first at-bat on a one-out, two run home run and a two-out double to right field, 3-0. Chestnut Hill College (12-9-1) knocked a run off the deficit with a third-inning Small sacrifice fly, 3-1, unfortunately, the Wildcats plated two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to separate for a 5-1 advantage.

The tide turned in the fourth inning as the Scarlet and Gold netted six runs on four hits and an error; a lead-off single from senior designated hitter Christopher Demey (Phoenixville, Pa.), a pair of bunt singles from senior third baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), and Szumigala, an error at short, a Small walk, and a three-run double from Owens did the trick, 7-5. The Wildcats got one back in the bottom of the fourth inning, 7-6, but a Szumigala double and an error rendered it useless in the top of the fifth, 8-6. Chestnut Hill College added two more runs in the sixth inning, 10-6, three runs in the seventh inning, 13-6, to overpower the Wilmington University, 13-8.

The Griffins got a head start in game two as they netted three runs on two, first-inning, Wildcat errors. A lead-off walk to Craig, a beaning of senior second baseman Jon Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.), and an error on a Monaghan comebacker scored the first run, 1-0. After that, Monaghan stole second before an Owens ground-out and a two-out error at short accounted for the other two, 3-0. Wilmington University answered with one run in the bottom of the first inning, 3-1, and that is where the spread remained until the sixth inning.

There, the Scarlet and Gold extended their advantage to 6-1, before cutting a Wildcat rally short, 6-3. Chestnut Hill College hit the Wilmington University reliever as freshman catcher Thomas Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) led off with a single up the middle and moved to second base on a wild pitch, prior to a pair of walks and an RBI fielder's choice from Monaghan. A two-out Owens single to left field and another error brought home the other two runs. Senior Justin Harnett (Aberdeen, N.J.) (1-2) used the lead to earn his first win of the season; he allowed one run on three hits and six walks while striking out three over five innings of work.

Chestnut Hill College resumes their CACC schedule tomorrow, Saturday, April 8, when they host Nyack College in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
