Box Score 2 Waterbury, Conn. - (5/12/2017) – For the third time in five seasons, #4 Chestnut Hill College will compete in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Championship Round, this time opposite #6 Dominican College, who remained undefeated in double-elimination play. The Griffins made up for a 7-0 early-afternoon loss to the Chargers with a 5-3 triumph over #2 Wilmington University in the later affair at Municipal Stadium; where a fifth-inning Wildcat error and a four-run seventh inning for the Scarlet and Gold provided enough coverage for a complete-game victory (3-3) from senior
Justin Harnett (Aberdeen, N.J.). Junior left fielder
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded two (2-for-4) of the Griffins' seven hits versus Wilmington University, but plated Chestnut Hill College's first run of the contest with misplayed ball in center field.
Dominican College (20-26) scored five runs before Chestnut Hill College (23-20-1) recorded their first hit of this afternoon's first contest. The Chargers used a first-inning, lead-off double, a sacrifice, and a grounder to second base to score their first run, 1-0. They added four more in the second inning with a no-out two-run double to right center, 3-0, a wild pitch, 4-0, and a two-out single to left field, 5-0. The Griffins had their first hit in the bottom of the second inning with a lead-off single to short from junior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), but their best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the seventh inning. There, sophomore catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) led off with a double down the left field line before hustling to third base on an Owens fly to right field. Unfortunately, the inning came to a close soon after with a pop out to second base and a fly ball to centerfield. The Chargers already had seven runs at the time, scoring two in the top of the seventh inning with a lead-off double and a pair of run-scoring singles to the outfield.
Sophomore pitcher Kraigen Rasalla (Scranton, Pa.) pitched a gem for the Chargers. He allowed five hits and struck out ten Griffins in the complete game victory (7-5). The Scarlet and Gold got a quality performance from their bullpen. Senior
Dylan Borawski (Hatfield, Pa.) allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out three over five innings. Sophomore
Kyle Hasforth (Midlothian, Va.) held the Chargers scoreless over the final two frames without allowing a base runner.
Harnett (3-3) dominated Wilmington University (30-21) through the first six frames of the second game. Meanwhile, in the fifth inning a two-out walk to junior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) led to the Griffins' first run. He scored a batter later, hustling home on Isaac's liner to centerfield, 1-0. In the seventh inning, a one-out walk to freshman second baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), a single to centerfield from sophomore centerfielder
Vincent Case (Southampton, Pa.), and a fielder's choice brought the next Scarlet and Gold run across, 2-0. Three more followed with a wild pitch, 3-0, another fielder's choice, an interference call, 4-0, and a two-out single to right field from sophomore designated hitter
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), 5-0. The Wildcats got two of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning, 5-2, and plated another in the ninth, 5-3, but Harnett worked his way through the final frame for his third win of the season. He allowed three runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out one.
Tomorrow, Saturday, May 13, the first CACC Baseball Championship game between Chestnut Hill College and Dominican College is scheduled for a 9:00 a.m. first pitch. If the Griffins win, a second contest will follow.
