Six-Run Seventh Inning Drives Chestnut Hill College Past Kutztown University; 7-5

Box Score Kutztown, Pa. - (5/3/2017) – The Chestnut Hill College pitching staff got the run supported in needed today to outlast Kutztown University as a six-run seventh inning carried the Griffins to a 7-5 triumph over the Golden Bears. Four Griffins recorded two hits apiece in the contest, freshman centerfielder Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) and senior shortstop Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) were among them and both plated runs during the Scarlet and Gold's big inning. Sophomore Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) collected his eighth save of the season, striking out two in the final frame.
 
A beanball and a double to centerfield in the first inning put Kutztown University (15-30) on the scoreboard first, 1-0. Chestnut Hill College (20-19-1) got even in the top of the second inning, where sophomore designate hitter Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.) led off with a single centerfield and stole second base before reaching third after a walk to senior second baseman Jon Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) and a wild pitch. A walk to Craig loaded the bases for junior left fielder Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.), who ripped the ball back up the middle to plate Small, 1-1.
 
The Golden Bears regained an edge with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, 3-1, but the Griffins' six-run seventh inning provided rally and coverage necessary to defeat the home team, 7-5. In the Chestnut Hill College seventh, Isaac led off with a single in the hole at second before advancing to third base on a single through the left side from sophomore catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.), and eventually home on a balk, 3-2. After a beaning of junior first baseman Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and a sacrifice from sophomore right fielder Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), senior third baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) knocked in the next Scarlet and Gold run with a ground out to short, 3-3. A walk to Small, a change of pitchers, another Small stolen base and, a wild pitch scored Owens, 4-3. Insurance runs scored later in the frame with an Uzzell single to right center bringing home one run, 5-3, and a Craig single to short netting another two, 7-3. Kutztown University threatened with a pair of runs in the eighth inning, but Cattai closed the door in the ninth.
 
Chestnut Hill College now prepares for Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament play as they are scheduled to host #6 Bloomfield College on Saturday, May 6, in a 2:00 p.m. Opening Round contest.
