Box Score 2 Rockville Centre, N.Y. - (9/2/2017) – The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team remained at Molloy College for today's competitions versus West Liberty State University (WLSU) and the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Play for the Scarlet and Gold opened with the Hilltoppers, who defeated them by a 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-11) final, and ended with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-16) loss to the Bears. Junior setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) was the star for the Griffins with two kills, 23 assists, an ace, and six digs in the first match and three kills, eight assists, and five digs in the second.
West Liberty State University (4-0) gradually extended their lead to seven points, 17-10, before answering a kill from senior right side
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.), 17-11, with eight straight points, 25-11. In the second set, Chestnut Hill College (0-4) led the Hilltoppers to a 10-10 tie and owned a 16-13 lead, but gave way to a 12-6 WLSU run that pushed their match lead to 2-0 (25-22). The Hilltoppers sprinted to a 12-5 lead in the third set. After a Griffin timeout they extended their lead to 10 points, 17-7, before scoring another 25-11 win. Sutton found freshman middle hitter
Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) for seven kills. Kalala also recorded three blocks to lead the Scarlet and Gold with 8.5 points. Sophomore middle hitter
Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) chipped in with four kills and three blocks.
The New York Institute of Technology (3-1) did not give Chestnut Hill College a break in the first set the second match, scoring a 25-6 win. The Griffins owned their only lead of the affair early in the second set, 2-1, and slowed the Bears to concluding set wins of 25-18 and 25-16. Gelfan and sophomore outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) connected with Sutton for a combined 13 kills; the former scoring seven kills on a .350 (7K-0E-20TA) hitting percentage and the latter landing six on a .385 (6K-1E-13TA) hitting percentage.
The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team competes next, Friday, September 8, and Saturday, September 9, at the Wildcat Invitational, where they face American International College (AIC) (1:00 p.m.), Merrimack College (5:00 p.m.), Franklin Pierce University (12:00 p.m.), and Adelphi University (4:00 p.m.).
